Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, facing the Spanish coast, Tanger Med has become one of the busiest container hubs in the Mediterranean. For anyone shipping to or from Morocco, it is no longer just "the other port": it is a gateway to the main east–west shipping lines and a short truck crossing away from Europe.
Tanger Med in figures (2025)
According to the figures published by Tanger Med for 2025:
| Indicator | 2025 | Change vs 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Containers handled | 11.1 million TEU | +8.4% |
| Total cargo | 161 million tonnes | +13.3% |
| Trucks (TIR) | 535,203 units | +3.6% |
| Passengers | 3.2 million | +5.7% |
| Vessel calls | 16,686 | –4.5% |
| Mega-ship calls (290 m+) | 1,319 | +8.4% |
The port now operates four container terminals, including the recently commissioned extension of terminal TC4. It also handles vehicle exports for the carmakers based in northern Morocco — over half a million vehicles in 2025.
Why it matters for your cargo
1. Direct access to the major shipping lines
Most of Tanger Med’s container volume is transshipment: cargo moved from mother vessels on the Asia–Europe and transatlantic routes onto feeder services. For Moroccan shippers, that means a wide choice of services and departures, and sometimes faster transit times on long-haul routes than via other ports.
2. The road link to Europe
More than half a million trucks a year cross between Tanger Med and southern Spain by ferry. For road freight to Spain, France, Portugal or Italy, this is the backbone: a trailer loaded in Casablanca or Tangier can be in southern Europe within days.
3. Industrial and free zones
The Tanger Med platform includes industrial and logistics zones where manufacturers and distributors operate close to the port, which shortens supply chains for automotive, textile and electronics exporters.
Tanger Med or Casablanca?
Both ports have their place, and the right choice depends on your cargo’s origin or final destination in Morocco:
- Tanger Med often makes sense for cargo produced or consumed in the north, for transshipment routings and for combined sea–road solutions to Europe.
- Casablanca remains the natural port for the Casablanca–Settat economic region and the centre and south of the country, avoiding long inland trucking.
The total cost is what counts: sea freight + port charges + inland haulage to the final address. A cheaper ocean rate into Tanger Med can be cancelled out by trucking to Agadir, and vice versa.
Plan with your forwarder
We book FCL and LCL sea freight through both Tanger Med and Casablanca, handle customs clearance and arrange inland delivery. Ask us to compare both routings for your next shipment.
